Clear Crystal vs. Crystal AB: What's the Difference?

One of the most common questions I receive is: What is the difference between Crystal and Crystal AB Swarovski Crystal colors? While both are beautiful crystal colors, they create very different looks. Here's a quick comparison to help you choose the right option for your crystal license plate frame or bling accessory.

These are some of the questions I get asked on a regular basis, so let's discuss them here.

The Swarovski (and other rhinestone qualities) color for clear crystals is called "Crystal." It is a transparent crystal that resembles the look of a real diamond and produces bright, colorful sparkles in the light.

The color "Crystal AB" uses that same crystal but adds a special coating to the surface, creating an iridescent rainbow-like effect. As the crystal moves in the light, it can reflect shades of pink, blue, yellow, gold, purple, and other colors that shift depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

With Swarovski crystals, this coating is permanent and cannot be washed off. The "AB" stands for Aurora Borealis, inspired by the colorful Northern Lights seen in the northern skies.

The Crystal AB color was created in 1956 when Swarovski collaborated with fashion designer Christian Dior. Beauty and expression played a major role in Dior's vision, and his crystal-embellished evening gowns went on to become some of his most iconic designs. To this day, Crystal AB remains one of the most recognized and popular Swarovski crystal effect colors.

So which option is right for you?

It's really a matter of personal preference.

If you love the classic look of a diamond, Crystal (clear) is usually the best choice. If you prefer an iridescent look, Crystal AB may be the better option.

Both colors create beautiful sparkle, especially in direct sunlight and bright lighting conditions. Neither color sparkles more than the other—they simply create a different visual effect.
